On September 8th the 4th Vienna Ukulele Night took place at “Schutzhaus Zukunft” in, well Vienna 😉 It was the first time I attended and very exciting for me, cause I wanted to play my first open mic…
Workshop
But the afternoon started out with a workshop. I decided to do only one this time by Remco Houtman-Janssen (Ukulelezaza). It was a swing workshop with some great new right and left hand techniques. I really need this, cause my right hand is such a lazy b*** who does not want to learn new things. I’ll keep on trying to teach her though 😉
Forgot to take a selfie with Remco – hopefully I can make that up at the Berliner Ukulele Festival this weekend.
My first open mic
Open stage started at 4 and I signed up for a very early slot (to make sure that not too many people were there and I didn’t have to play after the pros). I was super nervous but also excited to do this. First song I played was “Ukulele Anthem” by Amanda Palmer and of course, I totally messed up the most important parts of the song: beginning and end…
Second song I played was “I get to do it with you” by Garfunkel and Oates. It was one of the first songs I properly learned and is still one of my go to’s when I pick up my ukulele. That one went better, at least that’s what I thought… (by now I got some feedback, that Ukulele Anthem was actually better).
Open Mic
Here are some impressions from my Instagram stories of some other amazing people who played at the open mic:
Concerts
After the open mic three bands were playing. First up Chilifish, who I already saw at the 2nd Austrian Ukulele Festival this year. Afterwards Remco did a lovely set with some amazing tunes and grand finaly were Ukulele Clan Band from Spain.
Raffle
There was also a raffle – and I was the lucky winner of a new ukulele:
All in all it was a great evening and I’m so happy that I finally had the courage to play at the open mic (I might even do it again).

Congratulations on your performance, it was great! I did my first open Mic recently so I can relate. I’ve been meaning to do a post about it….maybe next week!
You seem to have access to so many festivals! Cheers!
Thanks so much – it was really scary but it felt sooo good 😊 And yes, I’m glad that there’s so many festivals around, it’s a lot of fun
