“Monkey, Monkey, Elephant” – Original Song

Does your mind sometimes wander off and you can’t concentrate on your current task? Do you start with writing an important report and you end up thinking about monkey, monkey, elephant? Well, it does sometimes happen to me and there is this crazy scene from Gilmore Girls that inspired me for this song:

Okay, so here’s the scene from Gilmore Girls. Luke asked Lorelai to write a character reference for his court case to get custody of his daughter April. Lorelai is having a real hard time writing the letter and this is the dialogue that follows:

Rory:
Sounds like you’re over thinking this. Maybe if you just put pen to paper.

Lorelai:
I tried that, I thought, “I’ll just sit down and write whatever comes – no judgment, no inner critic.” Boy was that a bad idea.

Rory:
Really? Why?

Lorelai:
Because my brain is a wild jungle full of scary gibberish. “I’m writing a letter, I can’t write a letter, why can’t I write a letter? I’m wearing a green dress, I wish I was wearing my blue dress, my blue dress is at the cleaners. The Germans wore gray, you wore blue, ‘Casablanca’ is such a good movie. Casablanca, the White House, Bush. Why don’t I drive a hybrid car? I should really drive a hybrid car. I should really take my bicycle to work. Bicycle, unicycle, unitard. Hockey puck, rattlesnake, monkey, monkey, underpants!”

Rory:
Hockey puck, rattlesnake, monkey, monkey, underpants?

Somehow I remembered that it was monkey, monkey, elephant (not sure why) and this kinda became a phrase I sometimes use when I’m getting distracted. For this blog post I looked it up and realized that it’s actually monkey, monkey, underpants. But I feel my version is just as cute and valid 😉

Anyway, this is a dialogue that I just remember so clearly and I always thought that it’s a very good representation of how our minds sometimes work (at least mine). And it inspired me to write this song.

I love that it’s a funny song again. I feel like most of my songs deal with very heavy topics so it’s nice to get something light hearted out.

Here’s a first draft of the song, hope you enjoy:

As always, if you’re interested in the lyrics and chords you can check them out here.
