I really enjoyed the latest songwriting sessions with my husband Greg. He has a background in writing so I feel like he really brings an interesting set of skills to our sessions. “The Rain” is by far my favorite song that we did together and I hope you enjoy it just as much.
The song started out with a nice melody on the Kalimba. Hubby got himself one a couple of months ago and he enjoys playing it a lot. The fragile sounds transport you into this magical place and I love listening to him play. Usually it’s just freestyle though, no covers, restrictions or guidelines.
So “The Rain” started out with this melody on the Kalimba. I then tried it with some chords on my uke and Greg came up with the first two lines of the lyrics. It felt very organic and we started talking about what the topic of the song could be. I am not even sure where it came from, but the topic of war, losing yourself in the war and losing your home came up.
We both liked it, even though we knew that the song would eventually have to take a pretty dark turn. We finished the first verse and then let the song sit overnight. With a fresh mind we continued the next morning and I very quickly knew how I wanted to play the song. It all just kinda fell into place.
So here’s a pretty sad and dark song. I hope you enjoy it anyway and I’d love to hear some feedback in the comments:
